A calming dog bed only works properly if it's the right size. Too large, and you lose the enclosed, den-like feeling that makes these beds effective. Too small, and the dog can't comfortably curl up inside it. Sizing is the single most common mistake people make when buying a calming bed.
How Calming Beds Work — And Why Size Matters
Calming dog beds work by creating an enclosed, nest-like space. The raised edges provide something for the dog to lean against or tuck their head over, mimicking the physical sensation of being nestled against another warm body. For this to work, the bed needs to fit the dog the way a nest fits a bird — snug enough to provide that enclosed feeling, generous enough for the dog to fully stretch out when they want to.
How to Measure Your Dog
Measure your dog's length from nose to the base of their tail in their natural sleeping position — which for most dogs means curled up. Add around ten to fifteen centimetres to this measurement. This is the minimum internal diameter you're looking for.
Size Guide
60cm bed: Small to medium breeds — Chihuahuas, Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Whippets. Most dogs up to around 10kg.
80cm bed: Medium to large breeds — Cocker Spaniels, Border Collies, Labradors (smaller females), Springer Spaniels, Staffies. Dogs from around 10–30kg.
100cm bed: Large breeds — Labradors, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Boxers. Dogs from around 30kg upwards.
If your dog is between sizes, go up. A slightly larger bed is always better than one that's too small.
Other Things to Consider
Where will it live? Measure the space before ordering. A 100cm bed is genuinely large.
Is your dog still growing? Buy for their expected adult size.
Does your dog like to fully stretch out? Greyhounds and Whippets may prefer a larger flat bed with bolstered sides rather than a round calming bed.
