'Healthy.' 'Natural.' 'Premium.' 'Wholesome.' Walk through the dog treat aisle of any UK pet shop and you'll be surrounded by these words. They're on almost everything. And they're almost entirely unregulated.
There's no legal definition of 'healthy' in the UK pet food market. No standard a treat has to meet before it can be described as 'premium.' The words are marketing language, and they can be applied to almost anything.
What Actually Makes a Dog Treat Healthy
Simple, recognisable ingredients. The single most reliable indicator of treat quality is the ingredient list. A genuinely healthy dog treat has a short list of ingredients you can identify and understand. 'Chicken. Sweet potato.' is a healthy treat. 'Chicken (min. 4%), cereals, derivatives of vegetable origin, sugars, minerals, colourings (E160a)' is not.
Named protein sources. 'Chicken' means chicken. 'Meat and animal derivatives' means something very different — a catch-all term that can include almost any part of almost any animal.
No artificial additives. Artificial colours serve no nutritional purpose. Artificial flavourings mask low-quality ingredients. Artificial preservatives extend shelf life at the cost of ingredient quality.
Appropriate calorie density. A 'healthy' treat that's extremely high in calories isn't actually healthy if your dog is gaining weight from it.
Words That Actually Mean Something
Single ingredient — one ingredient, end of list. Reliable.
Air-dried / dehydrated — tells you about the production method.
Grain free — tells you something specific about what's not in the treat.
Made in the UK — tells you something about production standards and traceability.
Words That Mean Very Little
Natural, Premium, Healthy, Wholesome — all legally undefined in UK pet food.
Vet approved — check what this actually means. One paid endorsement is very different from evidence-based guidance.
