One of the questions we hear most often from new subscribers is: will my dog get bored of the same box every month?
The honest answer has two parts. First: yes, dogs can absolutely become less excited by things that are predictable. Second: a good subscription box should never be predictable, and if yours is, it might be worth reconsidering who you're subscribing with.
Why Novelty Matters for Dogs
Dogs are naturally neophilic — drawn to new things. New smells in particular trigger genuine interest and engagement in a way that familiar things don't. A subscription box that delivers the same treats and toys every month isn't delivering novelty — it's delivering familiarity, which is pleasant but not exciting.
What Good Variety Looks Like
In treats: Each month should bring a different mix of treat types and flavours — genuinely different proteins, different textures, different formats. The variety should also be seasonally relevant.
In toys: Toys should rotate between types — a plush one month, a rope toy the next, a rubber toy after that. Your dog should never know quite what's coming.
In extras: The little extras — bandanas, seasonal accessories, themed items — should change with the season and occasion.
What We Do at Postman Pooch
We track what's been sent in every subscription box so nothing gets repeated. Every month is planned to include a genuinely different mix — different proteins in the treats, different toy type, different extras. We also plan our boxes around the seasonal calendar.
The test we apply: would a dog who received last month's box be genuinely excited by this one? If the answer is yes, it goes out. If not, we change it.
A Note on Predictability vs Reliability
There's an important distinction between predictability (the dog knows exactly what's coming) and reliability (the dog knows something good is coming). The best subscription boxes achieve the second without the first. That anticipation is part of the value.
