Why Regular Cake Is a Problem
Human birthday cake is not suitable for dogs. The sugar content alone is problematic. But the bigger concern is xylitol, an artificial sweetener used in many baked goods that is genuinely toxic to dogs. Chocolate is similarly toxic, and many of the colourings and preservatives in commercial human cakes are things you'd rather not give your dog.
