Fireworks and Dogs: How to Help an Anxious Dog Through Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is one of the most stressful nights of the year for a significant number of UK dogs. If your dog struggles with fireworks, you're not alone and there's a lot you can do. Here's what actually helps.

Start Before the Night Itself

The most effective interventions for fireworks anxiety aren't things you do on the night — they're things you do in the weeks before. Sound desensitisation is the gold standard long-term approach: playing firework sounds at very low volume while your dog is relaxed, then gradually increasing the volume over several weeks. Your vet or a qualified behaviourist can point you in the right direction.

On the Night: Environment First

  • Keep them indoors — dogs have been known to bolt through gardens when startled. Check fences and gates before dark
  • Close curtains and windows — reduces both the visual flash and some of the sound
  • Create a den — a covered crate, somewhere enclosed where they can retreat with their bed and something that smells of you
  • Keep the TV or radio on — background noise helps mask sudden bangs
  • Stay calm yourself — dogs read our emotional state

The Calming Bed Question

A proper calming bed — with raised bolster edges and ultra-soft faux fur — can make a real difference for noise-anxious dogs. The enclosed design gives them something to press against, which is naturally soothing. Many owners find that having a dedicated safe space with a calming bed already in place before fireworks season means their dog has somewhere they already associate with safety when the bangs begin.

Our calming anti-anxiety dog bed is worth looking at if your dog doesn't currently have a proper dedicated sleep space.

What Actually Helps on the Night

  • Don't force comfort — if your dog wants to hide, let them hide
  • Do offer calm reassurance if they seek it — the old advice about ignoring anxious dogs is outdated
  • Give a long-lasting natural chew beforehand — chewing releases endorphins. Browse our natural dog treats for good options
  • Walk earlier in the day — a well-exercised dog is better placed to cope with stress
  • For severe anxiety, talk to your vet — there are evidence-based options that work best combined with environmental management

After Bonfire Night

Remember that fireworks season in the UK runs from late October through to early January — New Year's Eve is often worse than November 5th. The measures you put in place for Bonfire Night are worth keeping going through the whole period.
