How to make your own dog birthday cake
Here at Postman Pooch, we want your days to be fun packed and full of smiles! What better way to achieve this than to treat your pooch to a homemade doggie birthday cake? Baking your own dogs birthday cakes is creative, fun, and so simple. It’s a fantastic way to make sure you know just what’s in the mix. Nothing bad for puppy and all the things she loves best.
Here are two tried and tested recipes – Monty, Ralph and Boo (our doggie testers) all woofed them down before we could say num num. Baking dog birthday cakes is much easier than baking human birthday cakes – none of that creaming butter and sugar and then watching the mixture curdle as you add the eggs! Or, if you’re like me, watching them rise through the oven glass, only to flop when you open the door.
You just put all the raw ingredients together in a bowl, mix with a wooden spoon, bake, decorate and watch your pup drool with delight! She’ll love you for evermore. And so will all the puppy friends that are invited to join the party. Before we get down to the recipes though, take a minute to check out…
Things you must NEVER feed your canine friend:
These items are highly poisonous to dogs.
- Xylitol – sweets, some baked foods and diet foods have this artificial sweetener in. It can cause your pup’s sugar levels to crash dangerously and even cause liver failure.
- Chocolate – can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and even heart failure or death. You can decorate your cakes with doggie chocolate buttons which do not contain the poisonous ingredient, theobromine.
- Onions, garlic, leeks or chives- all foods from the allium family can kill pup’s red blood cells and cause vomiting and breathing problems.
- Grapes, raisins or sultanas – can cause kidney failure in dogs. Even a small amount can be highly toxic and cause repeated vomiting.
- Macadamia nuts – even a small amount can make a pup very poorly, combined with chocolate macadamia nuts can even be fatal.
Doggie Birthday Cake Recipes – Tried & Tested!
Sweet Turkey Dogs Birthday Cake
500g minced turkey or chicken
1 grated carrot
One small grated sweet potato
1 apple cored and chopped
Small handful of blueberries (optional, my dog loves blueberries)
Half a cup of oatmeal
1 cup cooked rice (I use frozen)
3 eggs
1 teaspoon of powdered health supplement (optional – I use Pooch&Mutt Bionic Biotic)
Savoury Lamb or Beef Dogs Birthday Cake
500g minced beef or lamb
1 grated carrot
2 celery sticks finely chopped
1 tablespoon of tomato puree
1 cup of grated cheese
Half a cup of oatmeal
1 cup cooked rice (I use frozen)
3 eggs
1 teaspoon of powdered health supplement (optional – I use Pooch&Mutt Bionic Biotic)
Prep: 15m Cook: 20m
Method
- Preheat oven to 180/Gas 5.
- Grease a 12 cup bun tin – or use fairy cake cases. I use fun Puppy Time Cake Cases
- In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients except the egg.
- Whisk the eggs, add them to the mixture and stir thoroughly
- Spoon the mixture into the bun tin cups or cake cases
- Bake for 20-25 min depending on the size of the cake cases. You can open the oven to check how they’re doing as these cakes won’t collapse. They should be just browning on top.
Allow to cook and decorate with:
- Cream cheese or peanut butter – either spread or pipe with an icing piper
- Primula cheese – which has a shaped nozzle so you can make swirls!
- Doggy treats
- Cute Dogs and Puppies Edible Wafer Cake Topper Decorations
- You can also bake the mixture in large loose bottom cake tins. This one has a turkey bottom and a lamb top, sandwiched together with peanut butter and decorated with cream cheese and dog treats! NUM NUM NUM! These take slightly longer to bake.
In the unlikely event of leftovers – just freeze. Your dog has seven birthdays to each one of yours so you can unfreeze one on each of his special days!
You can substitute any of the ingredients above for things that your pup loves – but always check that they are safe for pups to eat first!
Happy baking puppy lovers everywhere!
